Cataract Implants: Mini monovision reading correction and cataract surgery
Mini Monovision Intraocular Implant (IOL) correction is technique currently popularized
with certain presbyopia correcting IOLs. A presbyopia correcting IOL is designed
to address the natural loss of reading ability that come with maturity. A Presbyopic
patient therefore needs reading glasses.
Mini Monovision has become a recommended pattern of usage by some surgeons with
certain versions of premium implants. A web posted reference is:
Managing IOL Expectations
Patients who elect not to have maximal presbyopic IOL correction can still experience
the benefits of Mini Monovision. This is particularly true if there are coexisting
factors limiting them from having a presbyopia correcting IOL.
A potential enhanced benefit of Mini Monovision surgery is its implementation with
aspheric IOLs like the TECNIS® IOL. Aspheric IOLs are designed to reduce the incidence
of night vision distortions as demonstrated below.

Traditional intraocular lenses can reinstate distance vision, but they aren’t designed
to bring back the balance of youthful eyes. Images may not be as sharp as they could
be, and you may be left with the functional vision of a healthy older person, not
of a young adult.
Who might be an aspheric Mini Monovision candidate?
- Someone with a visually significant cataract.
- Someone with corneal scaring but not high astigmatism.
- Someone with Macular Degeneration.
- Someone who does not require a high level of presbyopic correction after their cataract
surgery.
The TECNIS® is not a presbyopia-correcting IOL but technologically offers superior
Mini Monovision night vision in opposition to any of the existing FDA approved presbyopia
correcting IOLS.
If night vision is a greater concern for you than presbyopia correction, but you
are still interested in having some functional near vision, consider a Mini Monovision
evaluation with an aspheric IOL. If you qualify, insurance companies typically approve
aspheric IOLS for cataract surgery. In this case, and unlike presbyopia correcting
IOL, the surgery can be performed WITHOUT any additional dispensing IOL costs
to the patient.
