In most cases, floaters are part of the natural aging process. Floaters can appear as cobwebs, squiggly lines or floating bugs. Our internal vitreous tends to shrink slightly and detach from the retina, forming clumps within the eye. These clumps cast shadows on the retina, the light-sensitive nerve layer lining the back of the eye. Such shadows appear to us as floaters. Perception of floaters, particularly if we recognize a change in floaters pattern, is a reason to be examined by your eye doctor.

As the vitreous shrinks it occasionally exerts enough force on the retina to make it tear leading to detachment. A retinal detachment is a serious problem that could lead to blindness if left unmanaged.
